The Transmission Control Module (TCM) relies on programming stored in its memory to provide gear shifting at the optimal time. These are sometimes updated by the factory of the manufacturer as new firm ware. The first input of the controller looks at to determine what action to apply is the position of the shifter. When the drive range is selected the control module will use its shift schedule to decide when to up shift automatically.
